The Várzea Ecological Park in Quinta do Conde is located in a wetland adjacent to the Coina stream, predominantly agricultural and ecological reserve, located in the parish of Quinta do Conde. This area is included in an ecological corridor integrated in the Regional Land Management Plan for the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon and also integrated in the National Ecological Reserve. A unique landscape unit, which characterizes the final course of the Coina River, the floodplain is an alluvial plain with an area of approximately 112,000m2. This new “green infrastructure” should support landscapes and native ecosystems, it should have the functions of an ecological corridor by providing habitats for fauna and flora, constituting an air and water filter, social and cultural functions by promoting an aesthetic and landscape balance. , providing the population with free spaces for recreation, leisure and environmental education. The Várzea Ecological Park is therefore a space of great natural value, inserted in the largest ecological corridor of this parish connecting Arrábida to the Tagus and, from now on, it also connects the population to the values of preservation and enhancement of the natural heritage.
The communication program for activities in the Várzea Ecological Park is aimed at the local community, schools and other visitors. The same program covers different areas under the banner of non-formal environmental education. Since 2014, they have been publicized through printed posters or presented on social networks. Here are some examples.
Visitors to the Várzea Ecological Park have at their disposal a brochure with the identified fauna and flora. This more developed information can also be consulted on information panels distributed in the park during visiting times.
